Mr. Riaz Mohammad Khan, former Foreign Secretary of Pakistan, addressed the members of the Institute and guests on 16 May 2011, on ‘After Osama Bin Laden’




A delegation of students from Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST), led by Dr. Riaz A. Sheikh, visited the Institute on 21 April 2011. The students exchanged views with S. A. Minam Jafri, Honorary Secretary, S. M. Fazal, Honorary Treasure and the research staff. They showed keen interest in the history and working of the Institute.



A lecture to discuss the situation in Egypt was arranged on 4 March 2011. Ambassador Shahid M. Amin spoke on ‘Egyptian Revolution and Beyond’ and Dr. Shahid Hassan Siddiqui , Chairman, Research Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance (RIIBF), spoke on ‘Egyptian Revolution: Is it Relevant to Pakistan?’



On 11 December 2010, an interactive session was held on ‘WikiLeaks and After’. The main contributors were Mansoor Alam, former Ambassador of Pakistan on ‘WikiLeak’s Impact on International Diplomacy’ and Mazhar Abbas, senior journalist, anchorperson and former Secretary-General of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) on ‘WikiLeaks: Access to Information’.




On 4 December 2010, an interactive session was held to mark the international campaign for 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence. The speakers were. Shagufta Alizai, Development Consultant and Founding Member of the Women’s Action Forum, on ‘Milestones in the Women’s Movement in Pakistan’; Maliha Zia Lari, Advocate and Gender and Law Consultant, on ‘Enforcing Affirmative Legislation’ and Arif Hasan, Architect and Urban Planner, on ‘Changing Gender and Family Structures’.




On 2 November 2010, Colonel AG Walden, Defence Attache of the Embassy of Sweden accompanied by Stefan Lof and Christian Schmidt of the Swedish Ministry of Defence and M. Moonis, Councul General of Sweden in Karachi visited the Institute and addressed a roundtable session on ‘Pakistan’s Energy Supply and Situation’.




On 30 October 2010, a roundtable session was held in collaboration with the Russian Centre of Science and Culture to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations Organisation. Talks were delivered by A. V. Demidov, Counsel General of the Russian Federation in Karachi on ‘Russian Vision of the Role of the UN in the Contemporary World’ and Dr. Tanveer Khalid, Professor of Political Science, University of Karachi, on ‘Developing Countries and the United Nations’.




On 16 October 2010, Dr. Isobel Coleman, Senior Fellow for US Foreign Policy at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York; Director of the Civil Society, Markets and Democracy Initiatives; and Director of the Women and Foreign Policy Program held an interactive session with the members of the Institute on ‘US Foreign Policy’.




On 9 October 2010, a commemorative session was held for Fatehyab Ali Khan, former Chairman of The Pakistan Institute of International Affairs. The speakers were Justice (R) Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim, Dr. Masuma Hasan, Agha Masood Hussain, Hafeez Lakho and Nausheen Wasi.




Walter Russell Mead, Henry A. Kissinger Senior Fellow for American Foreign Policy at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), visited the Institute on 6 August 2010 and delivered a lecture on ‘Future of American Foreign Policy.’



Admiral Noman Bashir, Chief of the Naval Staff, visited the Institute on 1 June 2010 and delivered a lecture on ‘The Navy’s Role in Peacetime Diplomacy: Emerging Scenario in the Indian Ocean.’



Dr Anatol Lieven, Professor, Department of War Studies, King’s College, London, visited the Institute on 18 April 2009 and spoke on ‘Changing Nature of War and War Studies.’



Dr. Stephen R. Grand, Fellow and Director of the Saban Center at Brookings’ Project on US Relations with the Islamic World, visited the Institute on 19 February 2009 and spoke on ‘US Relations with the Islamic World.’



A seminar, ‘Islamic Revolution of Iran: Consequences and Achievements’, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution in Iran was jointly organized by The Pakistan Institute of International Affairs and the Pakistan-Iran Friendship Association on 31 January 2009.



Zorica McCarthy, Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan, visited the Institute on 26 April 2008 and spoke on ‘Australian Security Policy.’




Peter L. Fedon, Country Director, Asian Development Bank, visited the Institute on 3 April 2008 and spoke on ‘Role of the Asian Development Bank in Pakistan’s Development.’



Admiral Muhammad Afzal Tahir, Chief of the Naval Staff, visited the Institute on 8 February 2008 and addressed the members of the Institute and guests on ‘Threat of Terrorism and Security of Ocean Trade: What contributions can the Pakistan Navy make?’



Dr. Robert C. Myrtle, Professor, University of Southern California, visited the Institute on 13 December 2005 and delivered a lecture on ‘Disparities in International Health Care and its Standards.’



Ambassador Karamatullah K. Ghrori visited the Institute on 31 August 2004 and delivered a lecture on ‘American Role in Near East and South Asia.’



Nawabzada Nasrullah Khan, Chairman, Grand Democratic Alliance of Pakistan, visited the Institute on 26 July 2004 and shared his personal impressions with the members and guests.



Dr. Greg Mills, Director, South Africa Institute of International Affairs, visited the Institute on 14 July 2004 and delivered a lecture on ‘An Overview of the International Situation.’

Naimatullah Khan, City Mayor, Karachi, visited the Institute on 31 December 2002 and shared his thoughts with the members of the Institute and guests.



Ambassador Mansoor Alam, Director-General, Foreign Services Academy visited the Institute on 2 February 2002 and delivered a talk on ‘Foreign Policy and Religion.’
